A rental car is not essential for a rewarding day on Santorini. From a Fira base, the useful trick is to choose two destinations and use the town as your connecting point. This route pairs a morning in Oia with an afternoon at Kamari, leaving space for lunch and a return before the day becomes a transport puzzle.

Choose Oia plus Kamari only if you are comfortable making four bus journeys and walking between stops and sights. If queues, heat or mobility needs make that too much, keep Oia and spend the afternoon in Fira. A smaller day can be the more enjoyable day.
Start with the Fira hub, not a list of island highlights
The official KTEL Santorini route page lists services from Fira to Oia and Kamari. Build this day as Fira–Oia–Fira–Kamari–Fira. Do not assume there is a direct Oia-to-Kamari bus or that every island village connects conveniently to the next.
Before leaving, check the current departures in both directions and identify the Fira boarding point. Keep a copy of the timetable, but check the station information again on the day: a web timetable is not a guarantee of a seat or an unchanged service. If the first queue is longer than expected, shorten the afternoon rather than chasing the original plan.
Morning: Oia, with room to wander
Take a morning departure that leaves you enough time to explore without making lunch depend on a perfect connection. Once in Oia, choose a modest walking loop through the village and public viewpoints, then return towards the bus stop with time to spare. The interest is the relationship between the white buildings, narrow lanes and caldera—not collecting every photograph on a phone itinerary.
Stay on public routes and respect gates, roofs and private terraces. Pause for a photograph where you are not blocking the lane; let residents, deliveries and other walkers pass. The village’s slopes and steps also mean that “near the stop” on a map need not be an easy walk for every visitor.
Lunch: return to Fira and reset
Come back to Fira for lunch before deciding whether Kamari still fits. This is a deliberate break, not wasted time. You can check the afternoon bus and return options, refill water and judge how much energy remains. A comfortable lunch is more useful than an itinerary that sends you across the island hungry just to preserve a timetable.
If you want a very low-transfer day, stay in Fira after Oia. Save the beach for another morning. Travellers with specific accessibility needs should ask KTEL about the intended service and boarding arrangements before relying on it; the route map alone cannot establish accessibility.
Afternoon: choose one beach
Kamari makes a coherent second destination because it has a listed Fira bus route. Keep the afternoon simple: a seafront walk, a drink in the shade, and beach time if conditions suit you. Wear footwear that works on pebbles and uneven surfaces, and assess local sea conditions before swimming. There is no need to bolt on Akrotiri or Perissa to make the day feel complete.
Check the return departure before settling down, and choose one that leaves a later fallback where services permit. Do not save all your margin for the last bus. If you are carrying wet beachwear, bring a small bag for it and keep the bus journey comfortable for other passengers.
What the four bus legs cost
On the official fare table, checked on 16 September 2026 and marked updated 19 May, the standard single fare is €2.20 for Fira–Oia and €2.20 for Fira–Kamari. At those fares, the four daytime legs in this plan total €8.80 per adult. That is a bus-only planning figure, not an island pass: meals, transfers from your accommodation and other purchases are additional. Recheck the table for changes and any applicable fare conditions.
Sunset: make the return decision early
For this two-destination day, our editorial preference is to return to Fira before evening pressure builds and enjoy the caldera atmosphere locally. It keeps the final journey out of the sunset rush in Oia. If Oia at sunset is your priority instead, make it the afternoon destination, skip Kamari and confirm your last workable return before going.
- Carry water, sun protection and shoes suited to steps; a bus day still involves walking.
- Check both outward and return services, not just the next departure.
- Keep the departure day separate from this sightseeing plan: airport and Athinios ferry-port transfers need their own checks.
- Budget for an alternative if a missed final service would leave you without a practical way back.
