An island room and a flight into Malé are only parts of a Maldives booking. The journey between them can decide which international flights are usable, what luggage you can bring and whether your first paid resort night is realistically reachable. Resolve the transfer before the room becomes non-refundable.
Ask for the whole route, in writing
Start with a precise question: “From my arriving international flight, how do I reach your reception?” Ask the resort to identify every leg, airport, pier and handover. Is the quoted arrangement a speedboat, a seaplane, a domestic flight followed by a boat, or something else? Do not assume the cheapest room lets you choose your own transfer mode.
Request the same description for the return. A short flight or boat crossing is not the whole airport-to-room time: ask about check-in, waiting, transfers between terminals, intermediate stops and the final arrival procedure. Get a realistic window rather than an attractive headline duration.
Test the international flight against the transfer
A seaplane example—not a universal rule
Trans Maldivian Airways operates in daylight and recommends international arrival by 15:30 local time for a same-day connection, and international departure after 09:00. Its resort transfers are arranged through partner resorts. Ask your own resort to approve your exact flights and operator; these cutoffs do not guarantee your individual connection.
Send the actual flight numbers, dates and local arrival and departure times before buying. Ask whether the resort’s answer assumes an on-time flight and how much margin it allows for airport formalities. An itinerary that works only if everything happens at the earliest possible moment is not a comfortable arrival plan.
If the flight does not fit, ask which overnight arrangement is required, who books it and who pays. Establish what happens to the resort night you cannot use. Do not rely on a boat or another aircraft being a readily available substitute unless the resort confirms that option.
Compare the complete return price
Ask for a dated quotation for all travellers, both directions and all compulsory legs. A transfer charge shown beside a room rate may need more explanation before you can compare it with another island.
- Is the figure per person or per booking, and return or one-way?
- What applies to children and infants?
- Are taxes, service charges and mandatory handling costs included?
- Is the transfer shared or private, and is a minimum booking required?
- If the room offer includes transfers, what conditions or flight-time limits apply?
Put the resulting total beside the accommodation cost for the same dates. Then add any required arrival or departure overnight stay. Our total-trip flight comparison worksheet uses the same approach: compare the journey you will actually buy, not its most appealing single price.
Your airline’s luggage allowance may not carry through
Ask for the allowance on each leg, including hand luggage, individual-bag limits and excess charges. If one operator permits more than the next, pack for the restrictive leg or price the difference before committing.
TMA’s published standard allowance is 20kg checked plus 5kg hand baggage per person, without an additional infant allowance. It also warns that a bag can sometimes travel separately. Confirm the terms on your booking and keep essential items, medicines and the things you need on arrival with you.
If you travel with diving equipment, a surfboard, a stroller, a smart bag or mobility equipment, send the dimensions and relevant details to the resort in advance. Ask whether carriage is accepted, whether extra arrangements are needed and who confirms them. A room reservation is not that confirmation.
Define the late-arrival and disruption plan
Ask what happens if an international flight is delayed, weather interrupts a leg or a missed connection changes your dates. Who is your contact at the airport? Who arranges accommodation, meals and the next transfer? What costs remain yours?
Check cancellation and amendment terms for the transfer as well as for the room. They may be handled differently. Ask whether a change to your international flight requires a fresh transfer quote, and how much notice the resort needs.
For the return, confirm when you will leave the island and where you wait before check-in for the international flight. If you need luggage storage, lounge access or assistance, ask what is included rather than assuming a long wait will be comfortable.
Keep one usable confirmation
Save the resort’s complete transfer confirmation offline with your flight details, booking reference, meeting instructions and contact number. If several emails conflict, ask for a single updated version. Reconfirm after any schedule change, and again close to departure.
Explore our Maldives collection once those practical foundations are settled. The ideal result is not merely a beautiful island: it is a booking whose first and last days you understand before you pay.
