A car-free Albanian coast trip works best when you plan the accommodation and the bus journey together. A room beside a town beach can make several relaxed days possible; a beautiful address beyond town may leave you buying transfers for every swim.
Start with one confirmed gateway
For a flight into Tirana, check the airport transfer before choosing your first coastal night. Tirana International Airport’s bus page lists a direct Hermes service to Vlorë at 1,200 Albanian lek one way. Confirm the departure for your date with the operator: a published route is not a guarantee that its next bus fits your landing time.
The airport also distinguishes two Tirana transfers. Its city-centre shuttle operates hourly, around the clock, while the separate South and North Bus Terminal shuttle is listed hourly from 07:00 to 18:00. The latter is the relevant option if your onward bus leaves that terminal. Do not buy a centre transfer assuming it delivers you to the intercity departure point.
Allow for immigration, baggage and finding the correct stop. If the usable onward departure is tight, a first night near your departure point can be more sensible than a prepaid coastal room you may struggle to reach.
Treat the coast as stays, not daily transfers
Vlorë, Himarë and Sarandë are useful places to investigate as bases, but they are not interchangeable stops on a guaranteed hop-on, hop-off service. Choose a town for the days you want to spend there, then verify the connection that makes that stay possible.
An illustrative slow route is an arrival stay in Vlorë, several nights in Himarë, then a longer stay in Sarandë. This is a planning framework, not a verified through-ticket itinerary. If a leg does not work for your date, simplify to two bases rather than inserting another change.

A date-specific Vlorë–Sarandë search in the official eTransport portal returned no results during our research. That is not evidence that no buses run. It means this guide cannot responsibly promise a coastal departure, fare or journey time; obtain current operator confirmation before committing to that leg.
Use eTransport to look for your actual date and departure location. Where a result is missing or unclear, ask your accommodation to identify the operating company and exact stop, then reconfirm directly. A screenshot of an old timetable is a lead, not a booking.
The address can matter more than the town
Before paying for accommodation, compare the arrival stop with the property entrance and the beach you expect to use. A short-looking line on a map can hide a steep approach, an unsuitable road or a walk you would not want to make with a suitcase.
- Ask for a map pin for the bus stop, not just “the centre”.
- Check whether the property is in the lower waterfront area or farther uphill.
- Ask how you reach the beach without a car, including the return journey.
- Get a transfer quote if the final approach is not comfortably walkable; include it in the room cost.
A central, walkable base also makes an uncertain beach-day bus less consequential. You can stay nearby instead of spending a holiday morning chasing a connection.
Add time where a missed bus would hurt
Travel earlier in the day when you have a confirmed option, and keep the arrival day light. Do not attach a non-refundable excursion or dinner reservation to the optimistic end of an unverified bus journey.
For a flight home, move to Tirana or a suitable airport-side base the previous day unless you have a robust, independently confirmed alternative. That buffer costs a coastal night, but removes the need for a long road journey and an international flight to work perfectly on the same morning.
Budget for both the normal plan and the fallback: local cash for a fare where required, a phone connection, and enough flexibility to buy an agreed transfer if needed. Ask about luggage, payment and ticket reservations when you confirm each service.
A booking checklist that travels with you
- For every move: date, operator, departure pin, arrival pin and confirmation contact.
- For every stay: beach access on foot and the cost of the last kilometre.
- For the final day: a route to the airport with a genuine margin, not just a plausible map estimate.
